The new landscape with the additional building works present a valuable opportunity for the Broome community: to provide a new consolidated landscape address and a verdant native planting palette for their public Senior school. The scope included re-vegetating the Frederick St verge, creating a generous landscape entrance, landscaped courtyards, outdoor amenities, safe cultural spaces and developing meaningful connections.

The existing building’s narrow verandahs make for tight sitting and circulation spaces. Instead, a new ‘cove’ verandah of generous width utilises the shade offered by the roof for seating, gathering and moving through the school.

A new central gathering place (Yarning Circle) offers a cultural place of community gathering. The shade canopy and the surrounding gardens offer a ‘place of sanctuary . A seasonal Yawuru garden has been incorporated for community ownership and planting,

Extensive field research into local Broome plantings were undertaken with continuing dialogue with the local Yawuru rehabilitation nursery for knowledge and connection.
